On Friday, January 18, our Lanier teachers and administrative team members participated in professional development focused on mindset. Collaborative working groups discussed the work of the author, Carol Dweck. Following discussions on how a closed or growth-mindset impacts student achievement, teachers mapped out a plan for the remainder of the semester focusing on student IB projects and instructional goals.
We have been fortunate to hire Mr. Franklin Nguyen and welcome him as the newest member of the Lanier faculty. Mr. Nguyen will teach IB Algebra I and Geometry. He replaces Mr. Wisniewski, who retired from HISD at the end of December after 41 years as an outstanding educator. We are grateful for his service to the students of Lanier MS and wish him well in his retirement.
Ms. Mayfield, the French teacher, also left at the end of the semester. Ms. Dyer, who is certified to teach both French and Spanish, graciously stepped in to teach French. We are currently seeking a full-time certified Spanish teacher to join the Language Acquisition Department. Our goals are to offer French in seventh and eighth grades as usual next year.
And finally, after 15 years of serving the Lanier community, Officer David Warren was assigned to another HISD campus. Replacing him is Officer Lisa Thornton. Officer Thornton brings many years of experience in the HISD Police Department to Lanier. I hope you will extend her a warm welcome to the Lanier family.
